What is a Whiplash Injury?
What Causes Whiplash?
When the head and neck are suddenly and forcefully whipped forward and back, mechanical forces place excessive stress on the cervical spine. Traumatic disc injury and soft tissue damage can occur.
Damage to the disc can put pressure on the nerves as they exit the spine. The pressure or irritation can be felt as numbness on the skin, weakness in the muscles, or pain along the path of the nerve.
Low back pain is a common feature after a whiplash injury. Studies show that there is significant electrical activity in the muscles of the lumbar spine when the neck is extended. This effect increases when there is neck pain, possibly as a way to help stabilize the spine when neck pain causes weakness.
Think You Are Suffering From Sciatica?
Firstly an assessment by a professional, such as our osteopaths, is vitally important.
Although many patients who come to our sciatica clinic are treated successfully, diagnosing the cause of your sciatica is paramount.
The causes range from disc bulge, disc prolapse, muscle tension or auto immune conditions. If sciatica is diagnosed, we work with you to develop a treatment and management plan that is best suited to you.
There are a number of things that you can do to help yourself and when you see one of our qualified osteopaths, we will be able to advise on the specifics of your situation.
What Can Help to Ease Sciatica?
Try to continue with normal activities. Gentle movements to keep the back flexible can also be helpful. Staying in one position for a long time is best avoided. Whilst you can sometimes get comfortable at the time, you are better to try to continue with normal gentle movements – this can help you with a speedier, more complete recovery.

How can Osteopathic Treatment Help with a Whiplash Injury?
Osteopathic care offers an opportunity for relief of pain from a whiplash injury.
Our osteopaths adjust misalignments of the facet joints and vertebrae to restore the nerve signals and improve spinal health, which can impact overall physical health. We make these adjustments using a thrust technique called manipulation. Our practitioners will also use traction techniques and work to reduce tension in muscles at the front, back and side of the neck using soft tissue massage techniques and techniques to treat the ligaments that have been over-stretched.
Our osteopathic practitioners will assess your posture during daily activities, work, and sleep and offer you suggestions for ways to improve your day-to-day spinal alignment. You may be given some additional advice about the use of heat, cold, and exercise to help maintain the results of your treatment.
