What are the Typical Causes of Neck & Shoulder Pain?

Neck & shoulder pain can ruin your day and even disrupt your sleep. Besides that, it is never fun to walk around the office looking like an extra from a Frankenstein movie!

Obviously, there are a variety of reasons why you may be suffering, but there are some particularly common causes.

If you have had an injury or whiplash you will almost certainly be aware of the cause. But other factors such as a poor sleeping position, bad posture (especially at your desk), and pinching a nerve can all cause problems.

More often than not, neck pain will subside in a few weeks. As Osteopaths we look at how we can help alleviate the condition and bring you much-needed relief.

What Causes Neck Pain?

We have mentioned a few possible triggers for the cause of the pain, and now let’s look at what it is doing structurally.

In most of these instances, the neck isn’t able to move around freely. A restriction in the movement of the upper back and the neck can cause the muscles to become ‘hypertonic’. This simply means that they have become abnormally tight and that they restrict movement and cause pain.

It is also important to rule out other possible causes though. Bear in mind that the condition can also be triggered by a degeneration of the discs, or perhaps an infection, such as a viral infection to the throat.

As always, your first priority is to make sure your condition is correctly diagnosed.

I took my newborn daughter to David due to her being very gassy and unsettled. Within the first week of David seeing her she was a lot more settled and was sleeping for a lot longer at night. I would highly recommend the treatment here with David for anyone with newborns with similar issues.

Great experience with Sanderstead Osteopaths. I began treatment due to a sports injury in my leg which greatly reduced my mobility. In all honesty, I just looked up osteopaths near me and these lads came up. Couldn’t be more happy with their work. Have seen both David and Clare on and off over the last 4 years with lower back pain/stiffness. They really know their stuff and have always provided me with solutions to my lower back. My job is quite demanding and doesn't help the pain (lots of driving and lifting) but knowing David and Clare will always be there to help at Sanderstead Osteopaths it puts my mind at rest. I started going weekly and with the regular treatments it's eased the pain so now I am going every 2-4 weeks. I would highly recommend either of these guys!

I had treatments for backache and neck pain with both Tom and David, during pregnancy and after birth. I found the sessions really beneficial, they were gentle but straight to the point causing the pain. My mother sorted her backache in 4 treatments too. And I also got my newborn treated which helped her as she is much more relaxed now. I definitely recommend this clinic, osteopathy is good at any stage of life.
